Geelong South is a residential area between the Geelong central city area and the Barwon River.

A prominent feature of Geelong South is Kardinia Park, home of the Geelong Football club since 1940. Originally known as Chilwell Flat, Kardinia Park was gradually transformed from unimproved waste land to a park during the 1870s. Its name came from the grazing property and homestead of Geelongs first settler, Dr. Alexander Thomson. There are also netball courts and a swimming pool in Kardinia Park.

Geelong South also has Richmond Oval, home of the Geelong East Football Club, and the Riverside Reserve, the site of several boat clubs which row on the Barwon River. The finishing line of the Head of River rowing regatta is just west of the Moorabool Street bridge, across the Barwon.

Geelong South has a primary school (1879), a railway station on the line between Geelong and the Western District, and a local shopping Centre along Moorabool Street.

Geelong South had a census population of 1,931 in 1981.
