Artisan food and coffee in the heart of Queenscliff.
Gary and Maria Anderson opened Belsize and Co in 2013. The pair had lived in London for 16 years, before returning to Sydney where Gary managed a portfolio of more than 70 restaurants, pubs and bars for Urban Purveyor Group (Sake, Bavarian Bier Cafe, Munich Brauhaus).
The toll of the hectic working weeks soon added up, and the family sought respite at a holiday cottage in Queenscliff. They eventually decided to stay and open a place of their own.
The cafe started as a tiny space seating just 12, but expanded two years in. The striking wooden floors and walls are made from recycled Tasmanian myrtle; and industrial light fittings and vintage chairs are softened by pops of green and strawflowers dotting the tables.
The coffee is a standout in the area. The beans are sourced from Rosso Roasting Co in Melbourne, paired with Sungold milk. Alchemy Woodfire Bakehouse across the road provides the cafe's organic sourdough, fruit toast and banana bread, and everything else is made on site.
The breakfast menu is composed of cafe classics such as smashed avocado, and zucchini-and-corn fritters. There are plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options. A liquor licence means brunch staples are joined by dishes that lean towards 'drinking food' on the lunch menu. Pair a Young Henrys beer or boutique wine with a housemade pie of Ballarat lamb shank topped with cheddar mash.
